A little about me...
Let’s start with what I write:
Speculative Fiction
But what does that mean?
By definition, speculative fiction, as a genre, encompasses stories involving the supernatural, paranormal… even futuristic.
But what do I write?
That’s always been an issue for me to define, because my stories tend to be “rock soup.” That is, the writing is a lot of something—like a mystery—flavored with a pinch of the odd, a cup of strange, and then a smidgen of romance, suspense, and maybe even a dollop of science fiction. But always, there’s a mystery of some sort. Not always a murder, but yes, they abound.
A friend says, I write speculative fiction in the form of cozy mysteries of the paranormal or supernatural variety. (Are those two things exactly the same? They’re not, in my mind, but that’s for another conversation.) To be specific, because specificity is a must, we’ll say I write cozy paranormal mysteries. Most of the rules for cozy mysteries apply. The paranormal makes a noise during the crime, growls throughout the pursuit, and roars in the final confrontation.
As I said, the story’s crime isn’t always a murder, but when that dreaded event occurs, you won’t have to peek through your fingers. Even when the murder occurs in front of you, it won’t be a bloody thing. Promise. These are cozy stories, after all, shorter in length and warmer in nature. Designed like a good cup of coffee.
But the language…
Now that might get a little sticky. Just a wee bit. The wonderful Gerald Betters and fabulous Frank Gamble often get… frustrated… and they sometimes utilize a colorful vocabulary on those occasions. But they’re not terribly profane, just… well, upper-floor barnyard flamboyant.
Now, to the mundane.
Nothing special about me. I might be old… possibly… but only as much as the world allows. In my opinion, I’m too old to have an age, having been born with most of my opinions intact, believing my own theories long before embracing anyone else’s. Ancient is probably a better word for my state of mind. And from that, you may well guess, my stories are also born full-grown.
But am I stuck in my ways, resistant to change? Never! The Geek Flag flies high and proud around here, with a total embrace of technology, new ideas, and great comic book movies. Change without hate, scorn, or the demeaning of anyone at anytime anywhere. Embracing the future means accepting what’s best about NOW.
In this life, I’ve been a daughter, a student, a seamstress, and a soldier. I fired an M16, taught basic electronics, repaired encrypted communications equipment, and potty-trained wee ones—not necessarily in that order—and spent a fair chunk of my life in MOM school. I’m a web designer, a crafter of scrapbooks and journals.
And between eclipses, a writer.
Where I live, there is silence, noise, construction and destruction. And it all makes for an interesting life.
That’s it. I hope you found something in the ramble that makes you want to stay and be friends. We can share a cup of Coke, coffee, or even tea. I’ll let you choose.
